GAN launches Learning Exchange at Resilient Cities Congress

Participants at the Resilient Cities Congress (6-8 July 2016, Bonn, Germany) will have the opportunity to apply to participate in one of three Learning Exchanges that the Global Adaptation Network is sponsoring this year. Anyone interested can attend the GAN Co-event on the Learning Exchanges at 13.30-14.15 on Wed 6 July (Room S25-26).

This initiative on Learning Exchanges has been launched by GAN to connect practitioners working on adaptation with their counterparts in other places, to enable them to learn from the experience of others. This initiative is motivated by a number of considerations:

  1. The most useful knowledge for adaptation practitioners is often practical knowledge of how to address particular adaptation challenges.
  2. This type of practical, ‘how to’ knowledge is not easily acquired from the scientific literature, or even from the many adaptation case studies posted online. It is best obtained through direct, face-to-face exchanges with other practitioners who have faced similar challenges
  3. Learning of this sort takes time and resources.

What is involved in the exchange?

The Adaptation Learning Exchanges will be between two or more groups of adaptation practitioners held both online and in-person. It may be that one group is, as a result of its own experience, in a position to ‘teach’ another group how to tackle a specific problem. Or it may be that the two groups can equally learn from each other. The exchange partnership will last between 6-12 months, including 1-2 exchange visits. The exchanges will be supported and facilitated by GAN and partners. The exchanges can focus on a wide range of adaptation knowledge topics as relevant for the exchange partners and the focus may develop over time as appropriate.

Who is eligible?

GAN would like to select the participants for one of the Learning Exchanges from those attending Resilient Cities 2016. Any group – CBOs, NGOs, governments, research institutes or informal groups– working on adaptation is eligible to apply.
